FIGT Membership Director Role Description

The FIGT Mission:

​Families in Global Transition (FIGT) is a caring community for the globally mobile where curiosity, connection, and collaboration happen. 

We are a welcoming forum for globally mobile individuals, families, and those working with them. We promote cross-sector connections for sharing research and developing best practices that support the growth, success, and well-being of people crossing cultures around the world.

Role Overview:

The role of the Membership Director is to welcome new members and enable our members to actively participate in our caring community.. The Director offers a warm welcome to all members and provides a space for members to connect . The Director actively engages with the Membership Team to assist in volunteer development. 

Overview:

  • Develop the Membership Team as they assist the Individual and Small Business members (all membership levels) receive the benefits of membership. Meet regularly with the membership Team to develop a team approach to serving FIGT.

  • New member welcome

  • Member care at all stages of membership, and that includes assisting members becoming connected with events offered by FIGT as a whole.

The membership chair plays a critical role in shaping FIGT’s membership offering and caring for the members in their various stages of membership. The number one priority is to welcome the new members brought in due to Communications marketing, events and various forms of outreach developed by the marketing strategy of the Communications Directorate and the board as a whole. Membership’s main aim is to build the community as it arrives at FIGT. 

Furthermore, the chair is responsible to identify, enhance and pro-actively engage its stakeholders. Its overall goals are to promote current offerings and develop new privileges for its constituents. FIGT believes that its members are essential and critical to the growth of the organization; therefore much effort is made to ensure that the organization has robust benefit offerings which attract people to become members of FIGT.

Top responsibilities and Tasks:

Membership Chair Responsibilities

  • Welcome new members and assist them in connecting to the various groups and events FIGT offer, through the monthly Coffee and Connect Zoom events that are held to serve three time zones as well as the membership WhatsApp groups

  • Understand current members’ needs and determine membership usage (through means of calls, mails or interactions with members)

  • Enhance current membership offerings (per level) and in conjunction with the Communications Director develop outreach strategy to grow membership base

  • Promote membership privileges within the marketing plan of the Communications Director

  • Ensure clarity on membership team responsibilities

  • Ensure clarity on privileges communicated - externally as well as internally 

Membership Support  Responsibilities (divide with Chair so that one liaises directly with Orgs/Small Biz and the other with Individuals/Students)

  • Be go to for ideas from our members as to own needs/interests/ideas (research/communication skills)

  • Support activity in Member’s WhatsApp groups.

  • Advise Communications of News; activities. Work with the new Communications Director to develop website profiles for members.

  • Coordinate (source) plan webinars

Membership Content/Affiliate Liaison (virtual)

Liaise with the Affiliate Director to assist with a “membership funnel” of drawing new members from the affiliate groups.

The Membership Director attends events held by other FIGT Directors as well as FIGT community events.

Liaises & works closely with:

Reports to Treasurer on ExComm and furthermore liaises and manages overlap of Membership with and is supported by:

Affiliates (membership funnel); 

Sponsorship (in line with new strategy); 

Communications (blog content, marketing of membership message AND engagement for members); 

Research

Administrator (membership management tool/website/updates on #s)

Top Skills/Experience:

  • A sense of humour, and a willingness to listen as members from around the world share their story, often at a difficult time of transition

  • Strong communication skills

  • Familiar working in a virtual environment is an asset

  • Ability to develop and leverage existing relationships, particularly through our membership WhatsApp and Zoom groups

  • Generate creative ideas

  • Serve as a facilitator with excellent organizational skills 

  • Membership outreach and understanding nuances of working in a non-profit environment

  • Flexible and be able to provide cross-support to other departments, when required

  • Comfortable working in a diverse, international and dynamic environment

  • Experience in marketing if possible

  • Comfortable writing content for blogs/website

Time Requirement:

One and a half days a week

General Responsibilities & Requirements for all Board Directors:

All Board Members are expected to be able to use Google Drive and WhatsApp and work in virtual environments, and be prepared to learn to use other online platforms if needed. They are also expected to be able to help promote and network for the FIGT conference and FIGT membership, even if it is not a stated part of their role description.

  • Must be a current FIGT member.

  • Must have demonstrated commitment to and an understanding of FIGT through attending a previous conference, volunteering on a committee, or attendance at other FIGT events.

  • Ability to commit to 20 hours every month of volunteer work for this Board role.

  • Attend the monthly virtual General Board Meetings. The General Board Meetings take place once a month and are two hours long. Meetings are across time zones and may require working at irregular and sometimes difficult hours. If needs arise, there may be more than one each month.

  • Attend all of the 2025 and 2026 virtual or in-person events, including the Forum, Board meetings, Annual General Meeting. Since FIGT is a volunteer-driven organization, it can only cover the conference registration fee for its Board members. Board members pay for travel to/from conference and accommodation at the conference (in-person conferences).

  • Prior experience managing and enjoying cross-cultural teams in diverse locations. 

  • Prior experience and demonstrated skills working online using collaborative platforms such as Google Drive, Zoom, WhatsApp, and Doodle.

  • Available for on-boarding training during August and September of the year in which the board member’s term ends in order to ensure smooth transition to incoming board member (including attending the September General Board Meeting, meeting with predecessor, chairing a committee meeting (if applicable), and meeting with Executive Committee members to whom the position reports (FIGT President).
